Creative Writing: Murder Mystery/Detective Fiction is a 5-week course for 11-14 year olds.
The course will include:
An introduction to the murder mystery genre, key conventions and sub-genres including crime and detective fiction
A consideration of why the genre is so popular from Raymond Chandler & film noir to more modern crime fiction
Analysis of classic texts and detectives such as Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock and Edgar Allen Poe’s Dupin
Creative writing focusing on how to create interesting characters including detectives, sidekicks, criminals and villains
How to create an effective murder mystery mini-saga and build tension in your writing by gradually revealing clues and using red herrings to fool your reader
Lots of opportunities to hone your own detective skills including puzzles throughout and a ‘whodunnit’ activity at the end of the course.
Groups are 5 students maximum and we set an optional homework task after each lesson. If you need to miss a lesson, a recording will be provided.
